Alex Petkas is completing his PhD at Princeton University and teaches as a lecturer in History at UCSD.  He specializes in Greek prose authors of the later Roman empire and their engagement with their "classical" forebears.  His dissertation is on the practice and theory of philosophical letter writing in late antiquity, focused on the epistolary collection of Synesius of Cyrene (c. 370-415 AD).  He has related publications forthcoming and in progress on late antique rhetoric, classical Athenian oratory, and the Alexandrian philosopher Hypatia.
