My dissertation is a study of the production, transformation, trade and consumption of Oriental tobacco in Greece and Germany from roughly 1880 until 1945. More specifically, I attempt to reconstruct, and explain, those interactions between actors holding stakes in the political economy of Oriental tobacco which resulted in the transmission of historical change between Greece and Germany. In other words, this is the history of how tobacco mediated the strengthening of economic, scientific, political and aesthetic ties between Greece and Germany.
